Hawai'i TESOL and TESOL-Ukraine have had an official TESOL partnership for a number of years. In September 2019, the Hawai'i TESOL Newsletter The Word started a TESOL Ukraine Profile column. The purpose of this column is two-fold:  to help Hawai'i TESOL members meet more of their Ukrainian colleagues and to get to know more about the area where Ukrainian teachers of English work and live. Past issues of the newsletter can be found on the Hawai'i TESOL website. The May 2022 issue of “The Word” had another purpose – to make readers more aware of the effects of the war on the personal and professional life of EFL teachers in Ukraine.

The TESOL Ukraine board suggested Lyudmyla Hnapovska, Associate Professor of Foreign Languages Department, as a candidate for the TESOL Ukraine member profile in the May 2022 issue of The Word.

You can find the ‘Spotlight on Ukraine’ section with the Profile full version here (see p.p. 18-27).

Even in times of war, anxiety and uncertainty, teachers of Foreign Languages Department keep developing professionally. The joint project “Sharing Contexts Across Cultures” initiated by the professional association of English teachers TESOL-Italy to support the Ukrainian TESOL members is in full swing now. The 6th event in a series of online webinars, where both communities exchange their best EFL teaching/learning practices, was held on May 19, 2022. The webinar leader was Lyudmyla Hnapovska, Associate Professor of Foreign Languages Department, who shared insights from foreign languages teaching, learning and assessment at Sumy State University. Her presentation “TESOL in a Ukrainian Setting: QUO VADIS (A Case of Sumy State University)” arouse genuine interest with around 70 webinar participants who got a clear picture of the methodology and practices advocated in the educational setting of Sumy State University.

Sincere thanks to our Italian colleagues for their support!

“They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old:

Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.”

– For the Fallen, a poem by Robert Laurence Binyon (1869-1943)

TESOL-Ukraine and its sister affiliate Hawaii TESOL keep collaborating in solidarity with Ukraine. A team of Ukrainian teachers of English representing four universities (Sumy State University; National Academy of National Guard of Ukraine, Kharkiv; Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv and Dnipro University of Technology) were invited as plenary keynote speakers at the NAFSA spring conference “Educate, Advocate and Innovate with Peace and Aloha” held online on April 30 (April 29 local Hawaii time). Ukrainian teachers shared their insights from Teaching Practices at Times of War and Uncertainty in Ukraine, which was the issue of their team presentation. Their message appealed strongly to the hearts and minds of 89 Conference participants. Lyudmyla Hnapovska, Associate Professor of Foreign Languages Department of SSU, contributed with her talk on “The Grammar of War”.

The fruitful collaboration between TESOL-Ukraine and its sister affiliate Hawaii TESOL has gained new senses in the times of war. Members of Hawaii TESOL came up with the initiative to provide a series of free webinars to the Ukrainian TESOL community in April-May 2022 to support Ukrainian teachers during this time when professional development activities are limited. The webinars also aimed to connect more members in both affiliates. Lyudmyla Hnapovska, Associate Professor of Foreign Languages Department, was one of those who shared professional insights during these webinars.

Easter reminds us that hope must never be lost, for as dark as the road may seem,
