January 2023 Voices from the Classroom talks will bring to the forefront stories of our colleagues teaching English in Ukraine in the time of Russia's war against their country. We would like to hear about the following:

● What is it like to teach in the time of war?
● How has the war against Ukraine affected your teaching and your own and your students’ learning?
● How did you adapt? How did your students adapt?
● What is one most important lesson you want the ELT profession to hear about your experiences and why? We invite all interested ELT professionals in Ukraine to contribute.

On December 17, at 12 00, the open day will begin in the congress center of Sumy State University. High school pupils and their parents are invited to meet the representatives of specialties. During the event, it is planned to present educational programs, in particular, "Secondary Education" - the new specialty of the FLSС faculty, and to hold interesting interactive events. Everyone is invited to Pokrovskaya Str. 9/1 (SumDU Congress Center).

Heidelberg, the city where Germany’s oldest University is located, warmly welcomed participants of a study visit “CLIL at Work” that went under the umbrella of Erasmus+ KA2 project “Foreign Language Teacher Training Capacity Development as a Way to Ukraine’s Multilingual Education and European Integration / MultiEd”. During 5 fabulous days neatly packed with a variety of activities the programme team were engaged in observing and discussing secondary schools CLIL-Classrooms in various subjects (such as Physical Education, History, Maths, Fine Arts, etc.); doing a lot of creative tasks connected with implementing CLIL methodology and multilingual education, developing creativity and critical thinking of future teachers of foreign languages, making the concept of inclusivity work in a classroom; meeting Ukrainian kids who had to flee from the war and are now studying in Germany.

Special thanks are addressed to the study visit organisers, Dr. Hans-Werner Huneke in particular, for the high-level professionalism, commitment and support they showed before and during the project participants’ stay in Germany.     

On October 27, 2022 lecturer of Foreign Languages Department Svitlana Mikhno took part in International Forum in Virtual Teaching and Learning which was jointly organized by Camarines Sur Polytechnic Colleges (Philippines), Sumy State University (Ukraine), and Prince of Songkla University (Thailand), with the theme Harnessing Hyflex and Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) in Developing Global Citizens.
The Lecture featured three International lecturers: Mr. Tom Hendrick Freimuth, International Relations Officer, Faculty of Science (PSU) who discussed “COIL’s Mission and Framework”; Dr. Bagus Jati Santoso, Assistant Professor of Department of Informatics and Deputy Director of Academic Development, Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember, Indonesia, who presented his lecture on “Tools and Teaching Strategies for Effective COIL Projects”; and Dr. Alla Krasulia, Associate Dean for International Relations, Faculty of Foreign Philology and Social Communications (SUMDU) who focused her discussion on “Challenges and Benefits of COIL: Success Stories”.
Participants of the event came from 19 countries from Asia, Europe, Central America, Middle East, and Africa.

Stuart Carroll, a highly qualified teacher with an advanced scientific degree (PhD, Associate Professor) started the methodological seminars for teachers of the Foreign Languages Department. Dr. Carroll will provide answers to the questions and doubts concerning Grammar, basic professional concepts in the field of methodology and linguistics, different ways to engage students in lesson content, etc.

Teachers' Day is celebrated as a tribute to the valuable contribution made by teachers to the society by imparting knowledge and enlightening and shaping the career of students. The best teachers don’t give you the answer, they spark within you the desire to find the answer yourself.

Professor Stuart Carroll of the College of New Jersey will work at the Department of Foreign Languages of the Faculty of Foreign Philology and Social Communications at Sumy State University. Stuart Carroll, a highly qualified teacher with an advanced scientific degree (PhD, Associate Professor) with substantial academic experience in practical teaching, methodological training of teachers and in the scientific field of educational issues on English language teaching methods will teach English to undergraduate students at Sumy State University within the program Virtual English Language Educator starting in October 2022.

Associate Professor of the Foreign Languages Department Iryna Liashenko won a grant for study at the Norwegian University of Oslomet and studied in the spring semester 2022 at the Assessment and Learning course within the PhD Program in Educational Sciences for Teacher Education developed by Oslo Metropolitan University (OsloMet) and the University of South-Eastern Norway (USN) and offered in collaboration with Volda University. Iryna Liashenko studied with other doctors of philosophy - students from other European universities with high professionals and well-known researchers and professors in assessment: Dina Tsagari, Tony Berner, Sigrun Svenkerud, Siv Tereza, Maseidvag Hamlem, Kari Smith. Oslomet is one of the best academic and research school in assessment in Europe and a highly ranked university.

Within the framework of the joint project with the Czech University of Natural Sciences in Prague and a consortium of 4 Ukrainian universities "INCREASING THE POTENTIAL OF GRADUATE STUDENTS FOR QUALITY RESEARCH IN UKRAINE", Sumy State University invites you to take part in an intensive course on academic writing in English for free, held from 22.08 to 30.09 online on the Canvas platform.

The course is specifically designed for postgraduate students, novice researchers or scientists who wish to improve their ability to present the results of their research in English at a highly professional level and is aimed at strengthening the capacity and collaboration of young teachers, researchers and postgraduate students.

The purpose of the course is to form a system of knowledge about strategies and tactics of academic writing and technologies for organizing the processes of creation, analysis and editing of the main components of an academic article in English (Abstract, Introduction, Methods, Results and Discussion).

The course will be held from August 22 to September 30, 2022, on the Canvas platform in asynchronous mode, but in compliance with modular deadlines. Participants must be prepared to regularly complete tasks on the platform created from the authentic academic texts and videos, conduct discussions on the platform, review the work of their peers, and complete creative tasks.

The Czech side will issue an appropriate certificate after successfully completing the course. As a result of completing the course tasks, you will receive high-quality theses that you can submit for publication in the collection of the final project conference in Prague.

The best learner from each partner HEI will be granted a trip to Prague for the Summer School on Research Grants and a study tour in October 2022.

Who can apply?

Candidates have:

  • Be a teacher or graduate student of Sumy State University;
  • Have advanced reading and writing skills in English (B2);
  • Have regular and reliable access to high-speed Internet;
  • Be prepared to spend 6 to 7 hours per week online during the 5-week course;
  • Have a strong determination to improve academic research skills;
  • Be ready to participate in online discussions actively and complete all tasks on time.

By the end of the course, the participants will be able to:

  • Immerse themself in the academic atmosphere;
  • Develop reflection skills;
  • Write a high-quality abstract for presentation at the conferences;
  • Know and write the components of an academic article in line with the requirements of modern English-language indexed journals;
  • Receive a grant for participation in a summer school and study visit to Prague in October 2022.

Within August-December 2022, the Czech University of Natural Sciences in Prague (Czech Republic) and Sumy State University will jointly implement the development project "INCREASING THE POTENTIAL OF GRADUATE STUDENTS FOR QUALITY RESEARCH IN UKRAINE," financed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic. The project has been launched in a consortium with other 4 Ukrainian universities: Dnipro State Agrarian and Economic University, Sumy National Agrarian University, Polish National University, and Chernihiv Polytechnic National University. The head of the project from the Czech side is Adam Cashner, Ph.D., Faculty of Engineering. The project coordinator from the Ukrainian side for Sumy State University is a Ph.D. in Economics, Associate Professor Oksana Zamora, Department of International Economic Relations of the BiEM National Institute of Economics.

The second course on the development of academic writing in English which was developed and taught by Associate Professor of Foreign Languages SSU Iryna Liashenko and delivered within the joint Ukrainian and Czech project "AgriSciences Platform for Scientific Enhancement of HEIs in Ukraine" has ended.
More than 60 applications applied tfor the course this year from more than 20 universities in Ukraine, but after the selection procedure, half a hundred participants from the consortium's partner universities were invited: Sumy State University, Sumy National Agrarian University, Bila Tserkva National Agrarian University, Kharkiv Biotechnology University and Dnipro State Agrarian and Economic University.
In the course developed on the Canvas platform, the participants learned how to build a research article according to the IMRAD structure, studied key elements of each component of a study, mastered the skills of academic writing and listening through integrated written and listening assignments, polished comprehension of academic texts, practiced multilingual and peer review skills. The outcome of working with the course is to write your own academic article in English according to the requirements of indexed international publishers. The course requires systematic work, but is awarding with the result: now the participants feel more confident in writing and reviewing academic research.
All participants received certificates from the Czech partner-organizer.
For the second year in a row, Iryna Liashenko has been collaborating in this project, helping scientists develop academic writing skills.
