The  Foreign Languages Department was created on August 24, 1968, it was growing and changing along with the university through difficult, but fruitful times.

Up to August 24, 1968, when the department was created, the teaching of foreign languages was provided by a corresponding section at the department of general scientific disciplines.

In 1960 I. Lukashenko became the first  teacher of the department, and later its the first head.

That was he who laid the foundation of the material base of the department. The first teachers of the departments were N. Tarasova, M. Yurchenko (Pratal), I. Tsiukhova, I. Nechyporenko, I. Dvornychenko, and later – I. Zakhovaieva, V. Berbeha.

In 1974 I. Lukashenko completed his PhD and became the  candidate of pedagogical sciences. The theme of his dissertation was the use of technical equipment for studying foreign languages. In the same year the first university scientific methodical conference on the organization of students’ independent  work was held.

In 1975 V. Berbeha became the head of the department. At this time cooperation with Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute grew stronger.

In 1979 young teachers (G. Lytvynenko, L.Yarmak, H. Kurylo) joined the department and enhanced its research and methodical work, much attention was paid to the development and publishing of scientifically-methodical materials for students.

In 1987 L. Voitovska (candidate of philological sciences) took charge of the department.

In 1991 – H. Lytvynenko became the head of the department. In September 2020 G. Lytvynenko, who has headed Foreign Languages Department for 29 years, transferred the leadership to Nataliia Tatsenko.
Nataliia Tatsenko started her carrier in SumDU in 2001 as a senior lecturer at the Department of Translation. In September, 2020 Natalia Tatsenko (DSc in Philology, Professor) took charge of the department.

On April 17, 2023, the academic council of Sumy State University made a decision to rename the Department of Foreign Languages to the Department of Foreign Languages and Linguodidactics.
